Q 01: What is Windows Registry?

A: The Windows registry is a central categorized record in Windows operating system used for storing information required to configure the system for users, applications, and hardware devices. The registry contains information that is continuously referenced during operation, like profiles of users, applications installed on the computer, and types of documents each application can create, sheet settings for folders and application icons, types of hardware on the system; and which ports are being used. Windows registry is an essential part of Windows. If it is damaged, your whole system may be corrupted and result in Windows crashes.

Q 02: Why revive my registry?

A: Over time with normal use, your computer's Registry will become bloated and filled with obsolete or unnecessary entries. This is especially true as software, drivers, and hardware components are added and removed from your computer. With so many additions, deletions and other modifications, your Windows Registry can become filled with errors such as empty destinations, orphaned references, or it can even become corrupted. The need for you to clean obsolete Registry settings or repair your Registry errors becomes essential to ensure optimum performance of your PC.

Q 03: What's the purpose of the Windows registry?

A: The purpose of the Windows registry is to gather in one place all the configuration information about Windows. Before the Windows registry was introduced in Windows 95, configuration information used to be stored in .INI files and since each application/hardware component used many .INI files, which were scattered in many directories, it was next to impossible to keep track of all the changes to configuration, user preferences, etc., which frequently resulted to conflicts and system errors. Because of that it was decided that all the configuration information about Windows itself, the hardware, software, and user preferences must be gathered in one place to ease administration. However, the Windows registry is such a complex structure and when there is a problem in it, this leads to many problems and can render the whole system useless.

Q 04: How does the registry become erroneous?

A: The registry becomes erroneous when it contains invalid information. Some causes are the following:
Not using certain applications for a long time;
Downloading and installing new versions of applications without removing previous installations;
Uninstalling software without using the "Add or Remove Programs" feature in the Control Panel;
Moving a file or object in the registry manually.

Q 07: What causes your system to slow down?

A: Each time you open a program on your computer, visit a Web site, run a system scan or delete a file, an entry is created on your windows registry. These small data entries quickly add up and if you don't regularly clean your system registry, you'll see your system running slower from being bogged down with the extra "weight".

Q 08: How often should I scan my PC?

A: Scheduling a scan is dependent upon the usage of your system. We suggest scheduling a scan at least once every week if you are very active on your system. We also suggest that you run a scan after removing programs or if your system's performance seems slow.

Q 09: After cleaning and repairs why some registry items still appear on re-scan?

A: After cleaning the Registry, the first thing many people do is to run analysis again to see if it's really clean. In some cases, you may see some new Registry entries appear in the second analysis. This is nothing to worry about. Removing unneeded Registry entries, can sometimes uncover other entries that can also be removed. All you need to do is run Clever Registry Cleaner Free again and these will be removed. If you find some registry entries that are not removed even after a second clean then this is almost certainly because the entry has been locked by the OS. In this case, it is best left alone.

If these are locked files we suggest you to "Ignore" these files on future scans. You will be prompted to add these locked files to the ignore list during cleaning and repair.
